Tortula ruralis, Loonse en Drunense Duinen, Netherlands This is probably dried out Tortula ruralis, which in dutch we call "Little dune moss". The photo is not entirely sharp but all the whitish glow you see are "glass hairs". It's one of several strategies some moss species use to avoid drying out too much. Supposedly the white hairs reflect sun light and also act as a point of water condensation. It occurs in North America, the Pacific, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, North and South Africa, South America, and Australia. It grows in many types of climate, including the Arctic, boreal areas, temperate areas, and deserts. It grows in tundra, coniferous forest, grassland, sagebrush, and other habitat types.
