Eurasian Coots (Fulica atra) are known for their bizarre, lobed feet. The lobes are an alternative to webbing and increase the surface area of their feet significantly. Yet, their toes are also tightly compressed, so the foot remains blade-like and sleek. Lobed toes help coots push through the water with ease. When on land, the lobes fold back when the coot lifts its foot, which makes walking nearly effortless. Thus, coots have an advantage whether in the water or on land, when compared to most other waterfowl. {Spotted by Calbost in Australia} #Eurasiancoot #Fulicaatra
