Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) This is our neighborhood Eastern box turtle, Shelby. Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina)

This is our neighborhood Eastern box turtle, Shelby. She lives in a drainage ditch/meadowy clearing near the edge of our forest and beside our dirt road. She sleeps in the sunshine in the same spot around the same time every day (sometimes in different positions).

    1. She is still pretty young and small (guessing it is a she by the nesting behavior, but I didn't want to disturb her sleep to check). We have nudged her a couple of times to make sure she wasn't dead (LOL), but she seems to just be a heavy sleeper. She disappears during twilight hours, so we think she must have a safe spot in the gutter or the mud nearby.

      PS. We chose the name Shelby because it is pretty gender neutral and we were unsure of the sex.

The eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) is a subspecies within a group of hinge-shelled turtles, normally called box turtles. T. c. carolina is native to the eastern part of the United States.
