Tachinid Fly (Tachina fera)

It's been raining pretty solidly in my area for the last few days, but we had an afternoon of sunshine yesterday.

It's surprising how quickly insects suddenly appear, as if from nowhere as soon as the sun comes out.

This large Tachnid fly species is reaching the very end of its usual seasonal appearance, but this one is still going strong as witnessed in this video:

"Tachina fera" is a species of fly in the genus "Tachina" of the family Tachinidae. It is found across Europe as far north as Scandinavia. Its larvae are parasitoids of the caterpillars of moths in the family Noctuidae; afflicted species include the Broom Moth "Ceramica pisi", the Dun-Bar "Cosmia trapezina", Small Quaker "Orthosia cruda" and Common Quaker "Orthosia cerasi".
