Oak Processionary, Loonse en Drunense Duinen, Netherlands
Despite a general ignorance and disinterest in the insect world by the masses, there are exceptions. Such as the "eikenprocessierups", which became part of common vocabulary in recent years.
It is an infamous plague insect that has rapidly spread across the country. When the larvae are threatened, their microscopic "fire hairs" are released and carried by wind, a health hazard to people and pets.
In summer, it is now common for specialized services to check all oak trees and remove any nest they can find. A more natural way to fight them is by predation, lots of local birds eat them, but you need more birds than currently available.

The Oak Processionary is a moth whose caterpillars are pests in oak forests and pose a health hazard because of their poisonous setae, which may cause skin irritation and asthma.

"The backs of older caterpillars (3rd to 6th instars) are covered with up to 63,000 pointed defensive bristles,[citation needed] sized between 0.2 and 0.3 millimeters, which contain an urticating toxin, the protein thaumetopoein.[7] The setae break off readily, become airborne and can cause epidemic caterpillar dermatitis (lepidopterism), manifested as a papular rash, pruritus, conjunctivitis and, if inhaled, pharyngitis and respiratory distress, including asthma or even anaphylaxis." -Wikipedia Posted 4 years ago
