Giant Coua in Kirindi forest of Madagascar Not a great photo, but it was to us a remarkable spotting. This is a large ground-dwelling bird that is very shy and is extremely fast to run through the thick vegetation of the Kirindi forest, where it feeds on seeds, insects and small reptiles.

It has to be careful to not end up being the prey though. The mongoose we spotted that I shared in an earlier photo ended up chasing this Coua. Luckily for the Coua it survived. Coua gigas,Giant Coua,Kirindy Reserve,Madagascar Click/tap to enlarge Species introCountry intro

  1. Here is the mongoose we spotted at the same time, that ended up chasing the Coua:

Narrow-striped Mongoose in Kirindi, Madagascar So we walk the narrow paths of the Kirindi forest by day. Heading towards us on the very same narrow path is this mongoose. It doesn't exit the path, it keeps walking towards us, stops about one metre in front of us, looks up (see photo), greets us, and continues its path, still without exiting it.
The Giant Coua is a bird species from the Cuckoo family that is endemic to the dry forests of western and southern Madagascar. It is suggested that Couas probably originated from a particular Asian ground-cuckoo. Genus Coua contains 10 species, more than any other genus in Madagascar.
