The Magnificent Sea Anemone (Heteractis magnifica) is aptly named! Look at how beautiful this thing is! These animals are native to the Indo-Pacific and the color of their columns range from blue to green, red, pink, purple, or brown!
They can feed in two different ways: through the photosynthesis of its symbiotic zooxanthellae, which live in the anemone's tissues. Or, it can use its tentacles to grab, stun, and immobilize prey for consumption.
Sex is interesting for the anemone. They can reproduce sexually. In this case, the male releases his sperm towards a female, which stimulates her to release eggs into the water. The sperm and eggs unite and are fertilized externally...That's not the particularly interesting part. It gets fascinating when they reproduce asexually by scissiparity, which means that the anemone divides itself into two individuals, separating from the foot or the mouth. Very weird, but also incredibly efficient if you can't find a reproductive partner! {Spotted in Indonesia by JungleDragon moderator, Patomarazul} #JungleDragon #Magnificentseaanemone #Heteractismagnifica
