A Pycnoporellus! Yes, they really were that bright orange. These were growing on opposite sides of the same alder log that was lying on the mixed forest floor. From my observations (the only thing I have to go on) my first guess the ID would be Pycnoporellus fulgens. Quite a striking mushroom. 1. Beautiful!

Although I'm terrible at identifying fungi, I checked many reference photos and see the resemblance, including where it grows on, and distribution matches as well. Let's ID at least tentatively.

    1. Thanks, I guess if I was more interested in the ID (and not the photography) I’d load up on KOH and all the rest of the things needed to ID all these ‘Shrooms that are popping up everywhere. Posted 4 years ago
      1. What is KOH? Something similar to Mushroom observer?

In any case it may sometimes be needed to use additional services as experts are scattered and in short supply. So nothing wrong with that tactic.

        1. KOH... potassium hydroxide, a reagent that when placed on a fungus is used to determine a species. It turns different colours... or not. Ferdy, sorry, your comment gave me a morning smile! Posted 4 years ago
          1. Yes, what Gary says! It's a reagent used in mushroom identification. I have KOH, FeSO4 (Iron Salts), and NH4OH (Ammonium Hydroxide) in my toolkit! Posted 4 years ago, modified 4 years ago

            2. Lisa, needless to say I am overwhelmingly impressed! Posted 4 years ago
  2. That ID looks pretty good to me. I'm not entirely familiar with species in your area, but that looks like a good match! Posted 4 years ago
    1. Yes, that was all I have to go on... the visual information. Perhaps there is someone who will agree or not! The description of the pores on the underside was one of the features that sold me on the ID. Posted 4 years ago
      1. The pores are definitely pretty distinctive! Posted 4 years ago
