European Badger (Meles meles)
I hope you will forgive me this little act of self-indulgence (there may be one other)
I'd like you to meet Oliver and enjoy a little video in which he is the star.
Badgers are the UK's largest land predator and because of their largely nocturnal habits and shyness from humans are rarely seen up close. I have many friends who have never seen one in the wild.
Unless your name is Oliver:

The European badger is a species of badger in the family Mustelidae and is native to almost all of Europe and some parts of the Middle East. Several subspecies are recognised; the nominate subspecies predominates over most of Europe.

In the other direction I have woods, and protected Sussex Downland.
The Government's (Read: Farming Community's) position is that Badgers carry and transmit bovine TB, which is true, but true also of almost all mammals. Cows mostly infect other cows.
Pilot culls were carried out 6 or 7 years ago, but despite the Government's own expert panel concluding the culls were 'ineffective' and 'inhumane', the Government proceeded.
In early 2020 the Government announced it was scaling down the culls, instead of which, a few weeks ago, they suddenly announced they had expanded the numbers and areas of the 2020 cull significantly.
I'm obviously completely opposed to this slaughter, but that's a fair assessment of what's occurred.
Sussex is not a Badger cull area.

To end positively, was wondering if you're following this guy:

He's also got some badger episodes. Like his calm style, very modest guy. Posted 5 years ago
But I do now. Posted 5 years ago
He walked in, made himself at home and never left, about 7 years ago. :-) Posted 5 years ago
