  1. I love puffbirds, and while they are usually rare and/or hard to detect, I saw three species at El Paujil, a record for me so far! This one is a bit easier because a) it tends to be in the canopy and not in dense undergrowth and b) it has a loud, very recognizable whistle, which makes it significantly easier to track down. Though in this case, it hardly mattered, because he liked to forage in the clearing right around the station and I saw it a couple of times while I was having breakfast!
    Also, as an added bit of coolness, it's named in honor of Obama :)

The western striolated puffbird was considered conspecific with the eastern striolated puffbird. It lives in Bolivia, western Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Its natural habitat is subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests. It was named after U.S. president Barack Obama.
