
The ash-throated gnateater is a species of bird in the family Conopophagidae. It is found in the western Amazon Basin of Brazil, Peru and Ecuador. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest.

The 9 Conopophaga species, the original gnateaters, all look alike, with the characteristic white brows (more pronounced in males) made of feathers that can actually be raised when the birds are alarmed.
And then there are 2 species in the genus Pittasoma, which look and behave much more like antpittas, but genetic studies now put them in this family. One is in the Chocó and the other is one of the prettiest birds of Central America. I wonder if Minor has seen that one, actually! Posted 4 years ago
