  1. Not nearly as nice a photo as the previous one, but since that's a new family for JD, I figured it was worth uploading :) Posted 4 years ago
    1. Wow, had not ever heard of this family as a whole! Anything you can share about them? Posted 4 years ago
      1. Sure! It's a small family, with only 11 species. They're often put together with the antpittas in guidebooks, but they're probably more closely related to the true antbirds. And their behavior is antbird-like, perching on thin stems a meter so above ground, moving constantly and occasionally dropping to the ground to catch tiny insects. They're forest birds, found all over the wet Neotropics, mostly in the lowlands, but a couple are up in the Andes.
The 9 Conopophaga species, the original gnateaters, all look alike, with the characteristic white brows (more pronounced in males) made of feathers that can actually be raised when the birds are alarmed.
And then there are 2 species in the genus Pittasoma, which look and behave much more like antpittas, but genetic studies now put them in this family. One is in the Chocó and the other is one of the prettiest birds of Central America. I wonder if Minor has seen that one, actually!

        1. Thanks so much! And the gnats...this accurately is their main diet? Posted 4 years ago
          1. Probably not, but it's true that they mainly eat very small insects, 5 mm or less. But little is known about their ecology in general, be it feeding, breeding, etc They're elusive little buggers! Posted 4 years ago
