Edible Frog awaiting rain - 3, Berghem, Netherlands This pond was getting to dangerously low water levels. Water plants are exposed to air and the frogs pretty much standing on the bottom. Luckily, more wet weather followed in the weeks after, so they should be fine.<br />

  1. Is this the species of frog you see most frequently? Posted 4 years ago
    1. I think it is a coincidence where I found it a few times in a row in nearby areas on hikes done in the same weeks. Statistically, Rana temporaria is far more common.

Amphibian diversity is very low here:
      https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lijst_van_kikkers_in_Belgi%C3%AB_en_Nederland

And from that short list, you can exclude 5, for being rare.

And now that I double-check the list, I may have misidentified this one:
      https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lijst_van_kikkers_in_Belgi%C3%AB_en_Nederland#/media/Bestand:RanaRidibundaFemale.jpg

"A younger adult (female) Marsh Frog, Pelophylax ridibundus. This grass-green specimen might easily be mistaken for an Edible Frog (Pelophylax kl. esculentus)."

Hmmmmmm. I don't know how to distinguish between them.

      1. Oh, wow. I wonder if there are any groups to which you could post the photos? Also, I wonder if this could even be a hybrid... Posted 4 years ago
        1. Yes, should do that. Could be a hybrid and I think in a way Pelophylax kl. esculentus kind of is a hybrid itself. It's called the Bastard frog in some languages. Posted 4 years ago
