Bumblebee robberfly - habitat, Berghem, Netherlands
As it was a very hot day, I was about to exit my stay in the open until in the corner of my eye I saw something big and black moving at great speed. It was immediately out of sight yet I waited around, hoping for it to return. It did, after 10 minutes.
This is a pretty big and supremely hairy robberfly. Combined with black and yellow bands, enough reasons to give it the bumblebee nickname. They share similarities, except that bumblebees are terrible at flying whilst this apex predator flies like an arrow and reduces prey to milkshakes.
It is described as platforming on logs in the open, in full sun, which is exactly how I found it.
The Laphria genus' common name is Bee-mimic Robber Flies, a few more species here:

''Laphria flava'', the bumblebee robberfly, yellow robberfly or yellow assassin fly, is a fly of the Asilidae family.
