Malagasy Kingfisher sleeping in Tsingy This was the first time in our lives that we saw a wild bird sleeping. It did seem to awaken from the sound of our footsteps on the dry leaves, but stayed in a state of half sleep, not flying away. Quite amazing to see. The Malagasy kingfisher or Madagascar kingfisher is a species of bird in the family Alcedinidae that is found in Madagascar, and Mayotte. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical mangrove forests. It is closely related to the malachite kingfisher which is widely distributed in mainland Africa.
