Trogulus nepaeformis - with prey The third species of Trogulus known from the Netherlands. A somewhat older image of the scarcer species of the three, that I was able to ID with the revision of the Dutch Trogulus species by Hay Wijnhoven et al. (2014).
Most specimen previously ID'ed as nepaeformis turned out to be in fact Trogulus closternicus, after that name had been reinstated out of synonymy with nepaeformis, but a few populations in the Netherlands turned out to present the true nepaeformis after all :o)
Here are the other two:
1. This is the niche stuff that I love so much. "Overlooked" seems an understatement, even on big platforms seeing a few dozen reports only, of the entire genus. And they look so wildly different from the typical harvestmen. Congrats on completing the series! Posted 4 years ago
    1. Thanks Ferdy :o) "Overlooked" is often probably quite accurate actually, as these are almost impossible to "see" in their normal resting posture under a log or stone or some such, due to the sand sticking on their entire body for camouflage. The few spots where these have been found are typically the "hunting grounds" of specialists for soil fauna. Most other people would probably not even notice one sitting if it was staring them in the face ;o)
This here specimen was an exception as I found it wandering about in a tunnel under an old railway track in the middle of the night - obviously hunting, as it was carrying around some prey under its body ...
