Roe Deer, Berghem, Netherlands An unexpected daytime encounter with this female Roe deer. They are usually secretive, only active in the very early morning and just before sunset. It probably hadn't noticed me earlier as I was in a static position for some 20 minutes, not making much sound. Unfortunately, only had the macro lens with me. The Western Roe Deer is a Eurasian species of deer. It is relatively small, reddish and grey-brown, and well-adapted to cold environments. Roe deer are widespread in Western Europe, from the Mediterranean to Scandinavia, and from the British Isles to the Caucasus. It is distinct from the somewhat larger Siberian roe deer.
