Monarch Chrysalis - Danaus plexippus
This pupa looked like something had either take a bite out of it while it was still forming or it had a disease. Or, perhaps it was just deformed. The brown part was hardened and not an open wound. I took the chrysalis home to dissect it, but found nothing of value (to me, at least) inside. The inside was pretty much just black/dark brown goo with a few vague structures.
Habitat: Hanging from a rope fence in an old garden/meadow. Milkweed was nearby.

The monarch butterfly or simply monarch is a milkweed butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. Other common names depending on region include milkweed, common tiger, wanderer, and black veined brown. It may be the most familiar North American butterfly, and is considered an iconic pollinator species.
