Brimstone Butterfly (Gonepteryx rhamni) In the darkest days of winter, one of the things I most look forward to seeing in my garden is the Brimstone butterfly, which in certain light looks to me like the sun with wings.<br />
<br />
That first sighting means the days are warming and spring is sure to follow, lighting both my spirits and the world around me at the same time.<br />
<br />
The brownish spot evident in this photo, is mimicking the look of fungal growth on leaves. Nature attends to every detail.<br />

''Gonepteryx rhamni'' is a butterfly of the family Pieridae. It lives throughout the Palearctic zone and is commonly found across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Across much of its range, it is the only species of its genus, and is therefore simply known locally as the brimstone.
