Common Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus) On a windy day in May, walking close to some reed beds by a local river, I could just about hear the familiar soft buzzing descending ‘shioo’ call of Reed Buntings, each time there was a lull in the wind.
I finally managed to inch close enough to a clear look at one or two as they hung on to the reeds and zipped about looking for food.
This one, possibly a juvenile, had clearly succeeded,
The common reed bunting is a passerine bird in the bunting family Emberizidae, a group now separated by most modern authors from the finches, Fringillidae. It breeds across Europe and much of temperate and northern Asia. Most birds migrate south in winter, but those in the milder south and west of the range are resident.
