Lowbush Blueberry - Vaccinium angustifolium
Native to eastern North America, this species of blueberry bush only grows to 60 cm tall (~2 feet), maximum. The ripe berries are dark bluish black and are usually smaller than Vaccinium corymbosum. It grows in very acidic, well-drained soil.
Maine (and other states) rely on migrant workers to pick the blueberries. Raking the berries is hot, backbreaking, brutal work, and many farms are turning to mechanization for picking and processing rather than relying on the migrant workers. Migrants travel around the country, working and picking the crops that are in season. I was friends with some migrant workers when I lived in Maine and their work and lives was definitely very difficult.

''Vaccinium angustifolium'', commonly known as the Lowbush Blueberry, is a species of blueberry native to eastern and central Canada and the northeastern United States, growing as far south as West Virginia and west to the Great Lakes region, Minnesota and Manitoba.
