  • Portrait of a Bighorn Ram While watching some bighorn rams in Yellowstone National Park, this ram approached the area I was crouched in to a distance that made even myself uncomfortable. Likely, this mature ram would not show any aggression towards me, but he is wild and unpredictable. I was waiting by the Yellowstone River for the rams to come down for a drink or eat grass by along the river bank when he walked up and starting browsing at a distance of only 4 or 5 meters! He was even kind enough to pose for me. Bighorn sheep,Geotagged,Mammals,Ovis canadensis,United States,Winter,Wyoming,Yellowstone National Park

  • Bighorn Ewes Butting Heads Bighorn rams are known to butt heads in an annual ritual that places the sheep in a social hierarchy that decides who is top ram and who gets the best breeding rights. But apparently ewes, or female sheep, also tend to disagree on matters occasionally, as this photo shows. Captured in Badlands National Park, South Dakota. • Bighorn Lamb - Too Innocent This bighorn lamb was just hanging out by the side of the road a little ways away from the rest of the herd. It looks a little too innocent in my opinion...Captured in Badlands National Park, South Dakota. Badlands National Park,Bighorn sheep,Geotagged,Ovis canadensis,South Dakota,United States, fall, mammals

  • Bighorn Ram Skull I found this bighorn ram skull whilst hiking in the north unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep were introduced into the area after the badlands bighorn sheep were hunted to extinction in 1905. • Bighorn Ram - Country Boy Bighorn sheep do what all other ungulates found throughout Yellowstone National Park in the winter do - eat nonstop. They must eat enough calories to keep up their metabolism and weight if they are to last through the harsh conditions. This ram shown here reminded me of an old farmer because he would chew the grass with most of it hanging out of his mouth, like a farmer chewing on a piece of straw. • Girls Who Run The World These Badland ewes were very giddy and jumpy early in the morning. There were about 30 of them that starting running toward Travis and I as we were parked on the side of the road. We couldn't help but laugh as we watched them butt heads with one another and jump around like rabbits. Taken in the Badlands National Park. Bighorn sheep,Ovis canadensis

  • Stare down between bighorn ram and coyote A bighorn ram and coyote size each other up after three coyotes happened upon this ram along with two others on a steep rock face in Yellowstone National Park. Eventually, the coyotes and sheep parted ways without any physical confrontation. Can you find both? • Bighorn Ewe Stand-off Typically in the animal kingdom, the males are known to fight for several reasons including dominance, mating rights, territory, etc. What is often not known about or observed is when females confront each other. Seeing these two bighorn ewes face off like this was something very unexpected.

I have now witnessed moose, elk, white-tailed deer and bighorn sheep females all fight in some sort of way. Most likely they all were fighting over dominance and social status, but I am not positive, that is only a speculation.

  • Big Horn Ram This ram was the last one to catch up with the others as they made their way down the mountainside to the Yellowstone River. Something was wrong with his front, left leg and he limped with every step he took. Might have been from a fighting injury or from falling.. who knows. He was about 30 yards from me when I snapped this photo. Bighorn sheep,Geotagged,Ovis canadensis,United States,Winter

  • Bighorn Ram Babysitting Lambs This mature bighorn ram watches over three lambs as a blustery winter storm with wind gusts approaching 60 mph (90-100 km/h). The cover of the rocky mountain junipers keeps them out of the wind. Captured in Badlands National Park, South Dakota. • Bashful This ram, along with several others, was grazing on the mountainside just above the Yellowstone River in YNP. I was standing up top, watching these rams make their way down to the river's edge and noticed this guy was watching me too. He was quite the poser! • You Aren't Fooling Me! Clearly, I wasn't concealed well enough to fool the young lamb on the right. That is the most intimidating stink eye any animal has every given me!
