  • Above and below On this day, I was surrounded by clouds both above and below!

Wairakei’s Craters of the Moon geothermal area is part of the largest geothermal field in New Zealand. It lies within the Taupō Volcanic Zone.

Despite being on raised wooden boardwalks, one can feel the heat of the Earth while exploring this geothermal valley hissing with clouds of steam and cauldrons full of bubbling mud. If memory serves, this is Mt Tongariro in the background - an active, compound volcano.

The thermal activity is monitored regularly by scientists from the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Science. Autumn,Fall,Geotagged,Geothermal,Mt Tongariro,New Zealand,Taupō Volcanic Zone,Waikato,Wairakei, active volcano, compound volcano, landscape, volcano

  • The Devil's Bath This eye-catching and awe-inspiring pool sits in a slight depression, likely created during a massive eruption from underground.

It is well out of reach of visitors but the majority of it can be seen clearly from above.

The bright green water and mud mix gets its colour from deposits of sulphur and ferrous salts that rise to the surface and float on top.

There was quite a palette of mineral hues we saw across the location such as oranges, blues and reds that signify other volcanic elements. Geology,Geotagged,Geothermal,New Zealand,The Devil's Bath,Waiotapu, autumn, lake, landscape, scenery, volcanic lake

  • Waikato River New Zealand The Huka Falls are a set of waterfalls on the Waikato River that drains Lake Taupo in New Zealand.
A few hundred metres upstream from the Huka Falls, the Waikato River narrows from approximately 100 metres across into a canyon only 15 metres across. The canyon is carved into lake floor sediments laid down before Taupo's Oruanui eruption 26,500 years ago.
The volume of water flowing through can reach 220,000 litres per second - the roar was tremendous, the colour of the water spectacular!

  • Silver fern succumbs to geothermal waters A single frond of silver fern stood out to me as it lay in the boiling, shallow and chemical laden waters of one of the pools at Wai-o-tapu. • 3/3 New Zealand glow worm bioluminescence Image 3 of 3...
60 metres below ground surface in Ruakuri Cave, part of the Waitomo caves system on the north island of New Zealand.
Seen here is New Zealand glow worm larva exhibiting bioluminescence. It was just amazing to see the visual effect of this phenomenon, deep within the caves.
Flash photography was not allowed and capturing any image of these intriguing life forms in almost complete darkness was a challenge - I hope these images are of sufficient quality for others to enjoy. • Daisy the kunekune What a joy it was to recently be in the company of Daisy the kunekune pig. I was able to feed her, brush her and spend time watching and enjoying her antics. She was docile, very friendly and had a particular penchant for crispy apples. It was just great hearing and seeing her chomp on them, with all the juice running down her chin.

The kunekune is a breed of domestic pig from New Zealand. They are hairy with a rotund build and like Daisy, may have wattles (piri piri) hanging from their lower jaw.

Her human companions reckon Daisy to be around 12 years old and she stands 60 cm high. Artiodactyla,Domestic pig,Geotagged,New Zealand,Suidae,Sus scrofa domesticus,Vertebrate, animal, autumn, fauna, kunekune, mammal, ungulate, wattle
