  • Nine-spotted moth caterpillar This caterpillar just looks like it is wearing a woolen coat ;)
This is the caterpillar of the nine-spotted moth, a moth I photographed around this place last year. On a butterfly internet site I read that caterpillars which are walking on the ground are usually seeking a place to molt. That sounds plausible to me. Maybe me taking photographs prevented this caterpillar from being eaten by birds because he was very visible while crossing the concrete walking path.

  • Right on (9) spot Number 9 is mainly a night-moth, also known to be active at daytime.

Not the best shot, but I only had a few seconds as I was strawling through a patch of forest grass to meet my parents- in-law at their temporary house to be.

In the Netherlands only two main geospots have been noticed where these moths survive and enjoy. This one was a stray, as no populace lives in the near vicinity. Some 20 km distant one of the two populaces reside.

The normal residence of these moths in more in the central and south parts of europe. I was lucky? Amata phegea,Geotagged,Nine-spotted moth,The Netherlands

  • Phegea moth side view I expected that identification would be easy. I saw several of them and it is quite big and eye catching. But this moth was not featured on any of the insect sites I looked. Later I learned that it only lives in a few separated areas in The Netherlands.
(Ludosak already photographed and ID'd it a week ago but I forgot about that.)
