  • Euchroea histrionica, Euchroea Urania, Euchroea vadoni A little collage to show 3 different species of Euchroea that I recently photographed. Euchroea is a genus of beautiful scarab beetles endemic to Madagascar. Please see below entry points to many more photos for each species:

  • Thrips (Thysanoptera) inside California Poppy Yesterday, Christine pointed out that the tiny creatures barely visible in the core of this flower...
https://www.jungledragon.com/image/137941/california_poppy_-_flower_heesch_netherlands.html
...are thrips. An insect order (Thysanoptera) I had not even heard of and easy to miss at 1mm or smaller. Today I took the 2X and 5X macro gear to try and capture them.

A challenge to say the least. I had to get the lens inside the flower. Then added a ring focus light because I couldn't see anything at all. Followed by handheld focusing at 5x macro on erratic subjects, which very much is spray and pray. Not 100% happy with the result but still happy to have captured my first thrips, with major credit to Christine for the idea!

  • Xylocopa caerulea - sci-fi edition Consider this a non-serious "for fun" image. For this reason, I will not identify the species. This is just a test image from when I first added my continuous lights to my extreme macro setup, which is discussed at length here:

https://ferdychristant.com/my-journey-into-extreme-macro-8ddef548e9f3

Said lights allow for all kinds of accessoiries, including color filters. As I have multiple lights, it becomes possible to create outrageous and extravagant images like this. In this case, one light serves as global illumination in blue (large diffuser) whilst a pin light (honeycomb) adds the red accent.

The idea behind this one is a sci-fi movie poster kind of vibe, but admittedly execution is sloppy and the specimen was in a poor state. Extreme Macro,Heesch

  • Tiny diptera in flight, Heesch, Netherlands Strange odds at work here. I was slowly approaching this tiny subject without even knowing what it was, I estimate it at 5mm tops. It got spooked when flash triggered and by chance directly flew into the focal plane, which in this case is about 2mm deep.

I'm not sure what it is yet. I was considering perhaps a snipe fly or long-legged fly. Diffuser,Europe,Heesch,Netherlands,World, the Netherlands

  • Boletaceae Seen in St Pietersberg, Maastricht, Holland. Aug 2014.
The app ObsIdentify suggested this species and it can be found in Holland:

  • Rove Beetle (Staphylinidae), Heeswijk-Dinther, Netherlands Apologies for the poor photo, it's a deep crop of a very fast moving subject.

This arthropod can be mistaken for an ear wig, yet the lack of large pinchers (cerci) at the end of the abdomen give away that this is a beetle instead. In dutch, the family name "Staphylinidae" translates to "Short Shield Beetles". This is in reference to the wing casing being extremely short, requiring their wings to be folded up below it.

I've not yet been able to match it to a single species. There's many species, and information is scarce. Europe,Heeswijk-Dinther,Netherlands,World

  • Wolf spider hunting on water, Heeswijk-Dinther, Netherlands https://www.jungledragon.com/image/120035/wolf_spider_hunting_on_water_-_closeup_heeswijk-dinther_netherlands.html
I saw a tiny spider rapidly crossing a pond, clearly on the hunt. It's a wolf spider, one of multiple species known to hunt directly on the water surface, where they target small arthropods such as springtails. They have a line of sight of about 10cm in every direction.

This one is probably in the Pardosa genus, which has many species that can typically not be identified from just a photo. Species in this genus have a raised squarish block head where eyes are strategically placed so that no matter how you look at it, two eyes will always look at you. • Dolichopodidae, Long-legged fly I believe this to be a long-legged fly, family Dolichopodidae. They are predatory, and some 7,000 species are described worldwide. Besides their obvious long legs and typical posture, many species feature extravagant body parts, like the thorax seen in this photo. Most are really tiny, I estimate this one at 3-5mm. Heesch,Macro

  • Green bottlefly? Heesch, Netherlands The golden shine of this fly peaked my interest, but for now I still believe it's a green bottle fly. Heesch,Macro

  • Marsh fly, Heesch, Netherlands Deep crop. Based on appearance, my theory is that this is a marsh fly. They are also known as "snail killers", as they lay eggs near snails so that their larvae can hunt or parasite on snails. Heesch,Macro

  • Male midge on Common Mare's Tail, Heesch, Netherlands Not really happy with the cluttered photo. This is a male midge on the Common Mare's Tail, a water plant in my micro pond (just a bucket of water dug into the ground). Here's the full plant:
