  • A Gray Slender Loris, cute as can be This is (sub)specifically Loris lydekkerianus grandis, the Highland Gray Slender Loris. We spotted the eyeshine on this little cutie, and our guide got it to climb onto a broken off branch about five feet long. From there we took a bunch of photos before letting it climb back onto its original branch. Geotagged,Gray slender loris,Loris lydekkerianus,Sri Lanka,Summer

  • A Rhino-horned Lizard showing off his ridiculous schnozz This is the very silliest of the various silly Sri Lankan agamids. Nobody knows what the scary-looking horn is for. The lizards are timid and are not known to use it in self-defense or in combat with other Rhino-horned Lizards. Ceratophora stoddartii,Geotagged,Rhino-horned lizard,Sri Lanka,Summer

  • A colorful young Sri Lanka Blossom Krait (Rhabdophis ceylonensis) The adults of this species aren't nearly as venomous as the youngsters like this one. The species has a little venom, but calling it a "Krait" is pretty silly as kraits are extremely venomous snakes in the same family that includes cobras, coral snakes, etc. Geotagged,Rhabdophis ceylonensis,Sri Lanka,Sri Lanka blossom krait,Summer

  • Red-faced Malkoha closeup in Sinharaja, Sri Lanka Here is the mother of all bird spottings in Sri Lanka. This bird is much sought after by birders. It is confined in its distribution to the Sinharaja forest. Furthermore, it really is a forest bird that is very active in the high canopy, and therefore not often seen, and even more difficult to photograph. As a result, only a few dozen photos are online of this species across the web.

This was a case where ignorance is bliss. We had never heard of this bird, despite having a birds book of the country. It just fell into our lap. We were on a path in Sinharaja when out of the blue the ranger went nuts and kept pulling me in all kind of directions to capture this bird. I was carrying the 80-400mm and was struggling for about 20 minutes to get glimpses of this active bird, still not understanding the big deal. Out of 70 or so shots, less than 10 were somewhat usable, and I'm sharing them all. Not to show off, but to attempt to put more of this bird online.

  • A Shokar's Bronzeback posing on a mossy log We found this arboreal snake resting at night up in some vegetation about head-high. They can move surprisingly quickly through the trees, but this one seemed perfectly content to pose for us for a few minutes after we interrupted its beauty sleep. • Chrysilla volupe, Amabalantota, Sri Lanka This gorgeous spider was taken in Ambalantota, Sri Lanka. Fairly certain this is the right ID. I've been browsing through the spider section of the 2012 Sri Lanka redlist to ID my spiders and I have found nothing else like this. • A Knuckles Pygmy Lizard trying to blend in These huge-scaled little guys are not easy to find, because they are very slow and hunker down rather than trying to run off when worried. Look at the crazy scales! Cophotis dumbara,Geotagged,Knuckles pygmy lizard,Sri Lanka,Summer

  • Giant scorpion on the prowl This species is only known from Yala National Park, from which it apparently gets its name. I say "apparently" because the name is spelled "yaleensis" rather than "yalaensis", and the 2019 paper that described this species says it is from "Yale National Park", which must be a misspelling, no? So, sadly, I fear that its scientific name is based on a misspelling. I have tried to make up for that here by inventing a common name that is not misspelled. • Yala Giant Scorpion found outside Yala This giant scorpion found on my coconut estate in the Kurunegala district. I wonder if it is the Yala Giant because it is definitely a giant. Maybe some small differences in the pincers though. Can anyone identify? Geotagged,Heterometrus yaleensis,Scorpion,Sri Lanka,Summer,Yala,Yala Giant Scorpion

  • A young Striped Bronzeback keeps an eye on the camera You might (correctly) guess from the huge eyes that this snake is a diurnal predator with excellent vision. This is a little baby; adults are more stripey. Dendrelaphis caudolineolatus,Geotagged,Sri Lanka,Summer

  • A De Silva's Rough-sided Snake posing above ground This species was only recently discovered, and described in early 2019. My guide in Sri Lanka had never seen one and spent several hours digging in the right area in hopes of finding one. Meanwhile, I wandered around looking for frogs, lizards, and bugs to photograph. I turned over a few rocks, finding a few beetles, a couple of millipedes, and, of course, this snake. My guide told me I am probably the first foreigner to ever see one (much less find one). • A rare and very flat Kirtisinghe's Rock Frog This frog hangs out in thin crevices between slabs of rock. It's known only from the Knuckles Mountain Range in central Sri Lanka, and is one of the poster animals for "point endemics" of the area (species endemic to a very small area).
