  • Rook During a visit back home to England, I took a trip down memory lane and spent time on Salisbury Plain and at Stonehenge, a short drive from where I grew up. It was a bitterly cold and windy winter's morning. I saw this characterful rook all alone, sitting on a fence post, perhaps trying to warm itself in the weak sunshine that would occasionally break through the cloud.

I was captivated by this large corvid - seemingly stoic given its surrounds and the weather. A great obsidian megalith paying homage to the ancient standing stones, not so far away. Corvus frugilegus,Geotagged,Passeriformes,Rook,United Kingdom,Vertebrate,Winter, bird, corvidae, fauna

  • New Forest Pony The New Forest pony is one of the recognised mountain and moorland or native pony breeds of the British Isles. Height varies from around 12 to 14.2 hands (48 to 58 inches, 122 to 147 cm); ponies of all heights should be strong, workmanlike, and of a good riding type. They are valued for hardiness, strength, and sure-footedness.

The breed is indigenous to the New Forest in Hampshire in southern England, where equines have lived since before the last Ice Age; remains dating back to 500,000 BC have been found within 50 miles (80 km) of the heart of the modern New Forest. DNA studies have shown ancient shared ancestry with the Celtic-type Asturcón and Pottok ponies. Many breeds have contributed to the foundation bloodstock of the New Forest pony, but today only ponies whose parents are both registered as purebred in the approved section of the stud book may be registered as purebred. • All you can eat? Milly the Orchid Mantis deciding to stuff her face (again). I had read that mantis species are capable of capturing multiple items of pray at one time but I wasn't expecting to see this from my L3 instar mantis Milly. She caught 3 flies in quick sucession. Unfortunatly this picture only shows 2, the one in the left arm (her right) is still alive and caught in a deadly headlock. She had 2 in the right arm (her left) and you can see that she's made light work of them both. Very surprised at how efficient she is at killing things and how voracious her appetite is!

Capturing fly 1/3 (Pity I couldn't get her capturing all 3!)

  • Pebbles in the sun This lovely little otter was playing with a pebble, golden gleaming, sunlit. Just like our cats at home. At ease, dappled in the rays of beautiful day. I was for a full five minutes before realising the beauty of it on film.

  • European Bee Wolf (Philanthus Triangulum) What a fascinating little wasp this is, with more of interest than can be encapsulated in a few short lines. Particularly at 1am when my fingers are making typing feel like mixing treacle.

There's more information with this video, but if you don't know much about the Bee Wolf, I urge you to find out more.
