  • Common Blunt-headed Tree Snake - portrait, La Isla Escondida, Colombia Another meeting with this elegant lizard hunter. A super thin and strong snake that can stretch its body across a significant distance in mid-air, thereby not alerting any lizards sleeping in trees. This one was stick handled and put on a very large table at the lodge of La Isla Escondida. This individual is relatively short compared to earlier observations.

  • Blunt-headed Tree Snake - curving, La Isla Escondida, Colombia Another meeting with this amazing lizard hunter. The Blunt-headed Tree Snake is very thin and lengthy yet extremely strong and flexible. It masters gravity as if it does not apply and can span meters in mid-air without any support basis. It's using this method that it can pick sleeping lizards from a tree. By not touching the tree itself, the lizard is never alerted.

  • Common Blunt-headed Tree Snake crossing trees, San Cipriano Reserve, Colombia Not a very attractive photo but sharing it because it documents this snakes' unique hunting behavior. It is able to cross large distances between trees as if gravity doesn't exist. This way it surprises sleeping reptiles on trees that rely on vibrations to detect predators. • Blunt-headed Tree Snake - hunting position, Bahia Solano, Colombia Found during a night tour in Bahia Solano. Our guide Manuel picked it from the tree up onto a stick. However, this snake is so fast and thin that I found it impossible to photograph. Hence, we took the stick with snake into a vacant lodge and tried our luck there. A fun and acrobatic tour it was, with the snake constantly moving to the other end of the stick.

These are specialized lizard killers. Lizards that sleep at night strategically position themselves so that any movement of the plant alerts them. This snake completely bypasses that as it can stretch over half of its very lengthy body in mid-air, not touching the plant at all.
