  • The Chinese Mangshen Viper (Zhaoermia mangshanensis) inhabits the Nanling Mountains, Yunan Province, China. This individual from a conservation breeding program. The Chinese Mangshen Viper, Zhaoermia mangshanensis, is known locally in China as the “Little Green Dragon.” The species wasn’t described until 1990. The snake is only known from Nanling Mountains, Yunan Province, China. Its cryptic appearance has made it a favorite among collectors of venomous snakes, exerting considerable pressure on the species. The IUCN lists Zhaoermia mangshanensis as “VU” as vulnerable. • Paphiopedilum wenshanense, Orchidaceae Before the publication of Paphiopedilum wenshanense in 2000, this species was considered to be a naturally occurring hybrid. The putative parents were suggested as being Paph. concolor and Paph. bellatulum.

Having seen a small population of plants in situ when they were in bloom in May 2016, I've concluded that Paph. wenshanense is a highly variable species in both flower form and colour pattern. There was no evidence of Paph. concolor nor Paph. bellatulum in this area.

The plants were growing on a limestone mountain at around 1,500 m in Yunnan. This was the dry season and the nearby moss on the limestone was dry.

Colour varied from white to pale yellow or dark yellow with mostly bold spots. Of the couple of dozen plants that we saw there was only one twin-flowered inflorescence. All the others were single-flowered.

This one has a good rounded form, a deep yellow flower with bold markings on the dorsal and petals. China,Paphiopedilum wenshanense, lady's slipper, limestone

  • Cypripedium tibeticum, Orchidaceae One of the wonderful Cypripedium species from temperate climates is Cyp. tibeticum. This one was photographed near a village called Chuanzhusi, near Songpan, in Sichuan province, China in June 2012. The flower is 7 cm across.

The area was at 3,600 m elevation and I would expect that it would be probably covered with snow in winter. Obviously Cyp. tibeticum could only be cultivated by growers in a temperate climate who could provide the vernalisation [cold period] required for success. The Chinese Cavefish Working Group is a collaboration with the San Antonio Zoo, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, The New Jersey Institute of Technology, The University of Alabama - Huntsville, and Louisiana State University. The project has had a few years of National Geographic - China funding. This made obtaining images of groundwater wildlife in cave streams a priority.
