  • A Small Chiton! This small chiton is more than likely Gould’s Baby Chiton. It is quite common in our intertidal region. Although common it is not often seen because of its small size, up to 2.7cm. This little guy was 1.5cm. It was under a rock that I lifted to see what was there! The rock was carefully replaced.

  • A Midday Snack! This young spider has captured itself an aphid. The spider is about 2.5mm long and it was enjoying its snack on our living room window. I believe it to be a jumping spider, possibly a Proszynski’s Jumping Spider. Canada,Geotagged,Summer

  • A Peppery Bolete? Very autumnal colouration. Found in the middle of the trail/road separating a very old orchard from a mixed forest. No, I did not taste it. It did not stain blue and the mycelia seem to be yellow.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING from Canada!

  • More of the possibly Geometridae Inch-worm. A few more (full body) shots of my favourite wisteria devourer!

  • Friend or Foe? I followed Christine Young’s advice and went back to the Western Rattlesnake Plantain to take some closer photos of the insect “residents”. There were many seemingly dead bodies of what appeared to be globular springtails and one very green caterpillar/worm. It has been very dry lately and the springtails dehydrate and die but I believe that this other inhabitant may be contributing to their demise. No ideas at all on what it is or what it will be “when it grows up”! Canada,Geotagged

  • A Bombus Mistake! This poor bumblebee made an error. While visiting this daffodil the other sunny spring morning the weather turned cold. Not only did it turn cold but it also started to rain which then turned to hail. These photos were taken after dark with the on-camera flash. Upon looking this morning I see it is still there clinging to the leaves of the daffodil. Canada,Geotagged, bumblebee

  • Questionable Rock Frog Lichen Don’t know who made that name up. It was interesting to note the seeming isolation to this particular rock. Canada,Geotagged,Shingled rock shield lichen,Winter,Xanthoparmelia cumberlandia

  • Habitat Photos A great place for getting wet knees and using a macro lens! This expanse of granite will eventually have enough soil generated by the lichens and mosses to support larger trees. But right now it’s a great place for a summer picnic. Can’t wait! Canada,Geotagged

  • A Macro View! This image is of a Cladonia Lichen. Could it possibly be Cladonia uncialis. As a photographer I was attracted to the repetitive pattern made by the circular openings and the developing podetia. The common name for C. uncialis is Thorn Pixie Lichen. Canada,Geotagged,Winter

  • Leg and Foot Warmers! It is -8C (17.6F) outside. These photos show how to keep your skinny legs and your feet warm... if you’re a bird. Our local Glaucous-winged Gull and Northwestern Crow have it figured out. Canada,Geotagged

  • An Example of Xanthoparmelia cumberlandia? Shingled Rock Shield Lichen, Questionable Rock Frog Lichen, Cumberland Rock Shield Lichen, Xanthoparmelia cumberlandia... take your pick. I am going out on a limb on this one.

E-Flora BC Atlas says, “ Xanthoparmelia is taxonomically the most difficult of the genera previously united within Parmelia. Reliable identification of many species depends on a knowledge of the chemical substances they contain. Though this is most reliably attained through use of thin-layer chromatography, the chemistry of the B.C. Species can usually be surmised from the medullary reaction with K.”

This example is a smaller, 4cm in diameter, and younger one compared to older specimens.

  • Party Time! Sometimes when you take a photo in a dark place with the flash you don’t know what is really there till later. Sorry, no IDs this time. Canada,Fall,Geotagged

  • A White Bonnet! There are too many white capped tiny mushrooms for me to make a definitive ID. My guess is that it is a Mycena but which one? It was by itself on a mixed forest floor and the cap is less than a centimetre across. So, M. adscendens, or M. galopus, or M. flavoalba, or maybe it’s Hemimycena delectabilis. Help needed!
