  • A Thorny Devil (Moloch horridus) almost done crossing the road near Yulara, Northern Territory, Australia Thorny Devils can be quite common where they live, but their excellent camouflage and slow movement makes them very difficult to find. They are most often seen crossing roads, like this one was. Australia,Geotagged,Moloch horridus,Spring,Thorny devil

  • A moment of hope for Australia Yesterday, there was a small moment of hope and respite for me amidst the carnage here in New South Wales, Australia. Not only did we get some sweet, sweet, beautiful rain (not enough for a deep soaking, but enough to at least damp down the fires somewhat, although there are still 150 fires burning).

I went in to the garden to feel the rain on my skin and look who I found enjoying it as well. First I've seen in a long, long while as insect and arachnid sightings have been well down for me. She's so beautiful and I was overcome with emotion as I thought about our world without treasures such as this.

  • Tiny pink fingers forest orchid With a flower of just 20 mm diameter, these native orchids are exquisite.

Found in the east of this country, as its name suggests, the flowers are pink, although some plants bear almost white flowers. At times, they have a light, sweet fragrance.

  • Dragonfly, chocks away! With her aviator goggles on - a moment captured, right before take off.
Australian Emerald dragonflies are flighty little characters and more often than not will escape long before I get anywhere close enough to capture a shot.
But luck was on my side and I managed to do just that recently.

  • Sydney Funnel Web Spider Female, body length 45 mm. Dark, glossy brown/plum/black colouration. The body position seen here in this female is not aggression but defence. When operating at such heightened levels, she has her defences fully primed and ready to go...that is indeed venom seeping from those incredible fangs. She kept this stance for a minute or so, then went about investigating quite calmly. Seen in shrub with leaf litter and rock spread. Photographed in container setting, then released to original location. Distribution is centred on Sydney, extending north to me here in Newcastle, south to the Illawarra region, and west to the Blue Mountains in New South Wales. • Silver Gull The Silver Gull has a white head, tail and underparts, with a light grey back and black-tipped wings. In adult birds the bill, legs and eye-ring are bright orange-red.
They are found at virtually any watered habitat. Birds flock in high numbers around fishing boats as these leave or return to the coast, but seldom venture far out to sea.

  • Little wattlebird pair Found in coastal and sub-coastal east/south-east of this country.

The little wattlebird is a medium sized honeyeater, but is the smallest of the wattlebirds. It is mostly dark grey-brown above, with faint white shafts on each of the feathers. The underparts are grey and are heavily streaked with white. In flight, there is a large rufous patch in the wings. The eye is blue-grey. The sexes look similar.
