  • Bat Eared Fox This fox was part of a pair walking across the Namib Desert in the early evening. I took this picture while it was standing completely motionless in an apparent effort to locate its prey. After about 5 minutes of almost no movement, it suddenly ran to a nearby spot, and swallowed something in one bite. Afterwards, it carried on after its partner. • Black Rhino I came across this rhino on a morning drive in Etosha National Park in Namibia. A number of black rhinos have been poached recently in Namibia, including within the park boundaries. However, I was fortunate to see two of them in three days, including this one just as the sun was coming up. Africa,Black rhinoceros,Diceros bicornis,Geotagged,Namibia,Rhino,Winter, namibia

  • Male sable antelope I took this picture in a game reserve somewhere outside of Lusaka (although, I have to admit, I can't exactly remember where). The nice thing about the reserve is that walking was allowed, which I took full advantage of. I came across this male while on an afternoon hike. I was more or less bushwacking, and I don't think that many people ever stepped out of their safari vehicles, so this guy wasn't too sure what to make of me. So, the two of us stood there and stared at each other for a few minutes before he turned and ran, and I carried on with my hike. Geotagged,Hippotragus niger,Sable antelope,Zambia

  • Red-tailed monkey This monkey was a little bit inquisitive, and a lot camera shy. I was eating dinner in the Mpanga Forest Reserve (shortly after finding myself in the middle of an army ant swarm) when it appeared to see what I was doing. There was a lot of vegetation between the two of us, so this was the one mostly clean picture that I managed to take. Cercopithecus ascanius,Geotagged,Red-tailed monkey,Uganda

  • Red-billed spurfowl I found this bird rustling around in the undergrowth next to my campsite in the Mudumu National Park. The campsite itself was pretty spectacular. It was about 10km from everything else in the park at the end of a 4x4 track, right next to a hippo pool and, at least when I was there, smack in the middle of the stomping grounds of at least one large herd of elephants. So you basically enjoyed the view by day, went into your tent at night, and made sure not to emerge until sunup. Geotagged,Namibia,Pternistis adspersus,Red-billed spurfowl

  • Southern Swamp Deer I came across this subspecies of swamp deer in Khana National Park in Madhya Pradesh, India. Getting the shot was a little tricky because it was in a low lying marsh surrounded by tall grass. Consequently, every time I tried to take a shot, the grass in the foreground would obscure its face. For this shot it moved its head just enough to the right. • Bicolored frog I came across this bicolored frog in Periyar National Park, in Kerala, India. From the top, the frog was nearly indistinguishable from a leaf. Bicolored frog,Clinotarsus curtipes,Geotagged,India,Kerala, frog

  • Amazonian Creek I took this picture at the top of a small mountain in the middle of a 10 day backpacking expedition in the Amazon Rainforest in western Guyana. I spent most of my time traveling through lands under the jurisdiction of the local Patamona Indians. According to my guide, who had married into one of the nearby villages, I was the second white person to have ever been to that spot (the first was an amphibian researcher a year prior). Geotagged,Guyana

  • Central African Large-Spotted Genet I took this picture in the absolute darkness in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia.
