Flower bug

Flatida coccinea

The Flatida coccinea is a planthopper bug that is endemic to Madagascar. Literature has little details on this specie, yet casual observation shows the insect having a bizarre flower-shaped attachment on its back that likely is used for camouflage. In addition, the insects seem to live together in large groups, collectively creating the illusion of a plant in bloom.

Some report that the flower-shaped back is detachable and only occurs at the nymph phase of the insect's life. The adult appearance of the insect reportedly is way different, red-toned and without the back attachment.
