Evidence of Eaurasian Beaver in De Dijle

There are beavers in the river Dijle very close to our town, Sint-Joris-Weert in the nature reserve Doode Bemde. We never see them but we see their paths in and out of the water and their tree chewing. Is nice to know they are there :-)

  Yes! I lover the fact that they are there but I think to see them we would need to go at night with night vision cameras or something like that! they are really shy and no wonder why since humans have been so awful to them and sometimes still are.. Posted one year ago

    Oh, I didn't know that humans treated beavers badly! That's terrible. I love beavers, but never see them! I see their sign, but not the animals. I guess, as you said, you have to look at night. Posted one year ago

      In the past they were killed all over the place because the dams they make did not let water reach cultures etc. This happened worldwide but now they are more protected by laws :-) Posted one year ago

        Ugh, that's horrible. I did know that castoreum, which is "goo" extracted from sacs near a beaver's anus, used to be used as a vanilla substitute in foods and perfumes. Don't think that ever really caught on, though. Posted one year ago

The Eurasian Beaver

The Eurasian beaver or European beaver is a species of beaver, which was once widespread in Eurasia, where it was hunted to near extinction both for fur and for ''castoreum'', a secretion of its scent gland believed to have medicinal properties. Re-introduced through much of its former range, it now occurs from the British Isles to China and Mongolia.
