    1. Thanks, Barry! Usually, male cicadas gather on a tree trunk and sing using their muscles to flex ribbed structures called tymbals. Only male cicadas sing. Their color and pattern are quite similar to the environment and so they are difficult to be noticed. If they didn't move slowly up and down, I wouldn't notice them, despite the loud singing.
