  1. Dear all,

The 2nd contest of the summer games, the July one, is now closed. Automatically, the August contest starts now, so by all means keep sharing. This post is the announcement of the winner of the July contest.

In July, 1145 new photos have been submitted and I have been tasked in selecting the single winner. A difficult task as always. Once again I have selected 24 photos as candidates and put them in a list:

These candidate photos are selected based on their creativity, technical quality, timing, how interesting the species and/or location is, and how well the photo is described. Next comes the impossible job of selecting a winner, as I believe all deserve to win for being on that list. I will not keep you in further suspense, here is the winning photo:

I believe that photo is just perfect. In timing, emotion, composition and by introducing a new species. This is one of a few dozen bird species introduced on the site by this single user, being "Back Water Fox":

Congratulations, I will be contacting you for the prize money.

I want to pay some special attention to the runner-up as well, which is Wendy:

Deciding the winner this month was a choice between Back Water Fox and Wendy. Both have been sharing not one, instead a whole series of magnificent photos. However, this is not a best photographer contest, it is a best photo contest, and I had to pick one. Still, I believe Wendy deserves proper credit. As a 2nd prize, I will let Wendy decide to which wildlife charity JungleDragon's next donation will go, which is a 100$ amount as soon as we cross 19,000 photos on the site.

Needless to say, all others on the list hereby have an honorable mention and of course I thank all contributors to the contest. I encourage August participants to have a look at that list, to understand what we are looking for in a winning photo.

As said, the August contest is already running, so no time to waste :)

    kind regards,

  2. Update: Back Water Fox has insisted to not receive the money, and instead to spend it the way the community sees fit. What a great guy.

I can think of a few options of what to do next:

    1. Donate it to wildlife charity
    2. Donate it to the runner up of the contest, being Wendy
    3. A 50/50 split of the above

    What is your preferred option?

  5. Awesome photo, well done Back Water Fox!
The quality of photos submitted by both Back Water Fox and Wendy truly are astounding, well done to both of you.
I agree, the prize should go to the runner up, well deserved.

  6. Here's a follow-up after a discussion with the runner up, Wendy. We decided to go for option 3, the 50/50 split. So Wendy will get the much deserved 50 USD, and the other half goes to wildlife charity.

The wildlife charity will be aimed at Madagascar, Wendy's upcoming travel destination. And as we just crossed 4,000 species as well, I'm going to add 100 USD for a total of 150 USD to go to Madagascar.
