  1. Hi all, only just discovering the forum! I've been a member for just over a month now and loving it so far. My name is Stuart and I live in the UK. I'm an IT Security professional by way of trade and an all round computer nerd. In my spare time I keep 3 ant colonies (soon to be 4 as I've just obtained a Lasius Niger queen!!), play bass guitar and drums and do car detailing. Bit of a petrol head really.

I got my first ever DSLR camera a few months back after toying with the idea of getting one to take pictures and document the activity in my ant colonies. I wanted to go down the macro route seen as one colony has ants that are around 3-4mm in size. So far, the standard lens on my Canon 600d coupled with some £8 extension rings off ebay are serving me very well!

  5. Welcome on board once more, Stuart! Your ant expertise is unique in the community, and quite educational. And it is education that is our main purpose.

Regarding affordable macro, I know that @Garry has recently switched to a low cost Chinese lens that serves him very well:

  6. Thanks Ferdy - I'm really glad I can bring something to the table. I'll have to speak to Mr. Lomas and see if he can recommend something that will enable me to take better shots of these fantastic little ladies (with the occasional winged male!). Learning loads already from other members - this site really has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to wildlife and specifically for me....BUGS! :) Replied 2 years ago
  7. Nice to see that someone else has the bug...bug!! Replied 2 years ago
  8. Talking about belated welcoming / introductions ... welcome Stuart. I have a ton of bug pictures that I have no idea of what they are. I am going to upload them so that you can identify them. Good luck. By the way, in Africa, there is only one vehicle ... a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 pick-up. Or the all powerful 4.5ltr. Petrol 6 cylinder Petrol engine. I used a 4.5 EFI super turbo charged one during law enforcement duties. Nothing beats it. And it can drive over other vehicles !!!!!!!! A machine gun on top of it makes the world's difference.
