  1. We all know that flashes want to be used sparingly on any wildlife.
My local birds give me ONE shot with a flash, also I would not use it on parents or anywhere near a nest.
But then there are situations when you either get nothing, a lot of noise or no contrast OR use a flash.

After exploring many options like Venus' little macro flash with to antennas, I have discovered a CHEAP Nikon flash that does astonishing work even for macros. Look at my robberfly please.

So this is an SB-500, works down to 50cms , really light and two rechargeables last you all day. Whether you do a wedding or insects.
I have found that the built in LED is also quite useful.
Please keep in mind that your max working distance is about 20m.

  2. hi Annette,

Looks like a solid choice. I haven't used the SB500, but I've worked with a SB700 for years and now have a SB900. My macro ring flash has two SB200 units, so I'm familiar with the series.

I can only confirm that they are great. Last long, and above all "they just work". I rarely mess with settings yet almost always get a good exposure. The models I have do not have LED focus lights yet, I believe they can be quite useful indeed.

One small tip: if you don't use them for a while, remove the batteries. Battery leakage is what destroyed my SB700.

  3. thanks, yes ring flashes are great but not really an option for me . My main macro lens has a huge front diameter.
good point about the batteries. I usually keep them near the charger with the flash but I agree it is easy to forget
