Snakes, worms, anything that resembles the mighty reptiles.

with only a heat lamp to light
 the immaculate darkness.

Behold the black water snake... Zoom in to face the coolness. Elaphe schrenckii,Geotagged,Manchurian Black Water Snake,The Netherlands

  • That's a long lot of skin

That's a long lot of skin A zilion small plates glued together to form a snake. Who would have thought of such a design?
Another snap of the rat snake, showing a lengthy collection of the snake, without even seeing its head or teail. Reaching up to 3 meters it made up for a crowded cozy space.

  • Danger from below

Danger from below Disappearing from its tree trunk it tries to sneak up on me from the bottom up. I spotted him just in time (safe behind the plexiglass:))
Then it tries another approach: it tries to look friendly again. Aarggh, shall I trust him? Geotagged,Japan,Oliemeulen,Orthriophis taeniurus,Taiwan,The Netherlands, beauty rat snake, orthiophis taeniurus frisei, snake, zoo

  • In 3D: almost the largest, but certainly the strongest

In 3D: almost the largest, but certainly the strongest This kind python can unhook his jaw and swallow a quite sizeable prey. It does not have to bite as the muscles will just flatten the subject first. Only the anaconda matches this snake in length yet the anaconda is thicker. It beats the anaconda in strength. 7 to 9 meters! Wow its as long as a house is high!
I only did a headshot of its quite massive head (the size does not show in this picture:)), because of the nice strangely green colours it had, and look at those captivating eyes! Geotagged,Oliemeulen,Python reticulatus,The Netherlands, zoo

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end A lengthy snake, showing its true ending while facing me. It certainly caught my eye and I hope it does yours. So a fewe metres of snake concentrate to a small spot indeed. Watch out mice! • From head to toe

From head to toe This asian snake has a very distinct feature: a striped tail. The Orthiophis, or Orty to its friends, is a very fast mover and quite a climber too (even birds and sometimes bats in full flight aren't safe from Orty).
At birth these snakes have a 30cm head to tail and can reach up to 3 meters). Their native area of expertise is Taiwan and Japan. Geotagged,Oliemeulen,Orthriophis taeniurus,The Netherlands, beauty rat snake, japan, orthiophis taeniurus frisei, snake, taiwan, zoo

  • Red Rattle (and curious too!)

Red Rattle (and curious too!) He was quite a nosy one, I wonder why, with my little tripod carefully held upon the plexi cage that was his home. I made a lot of nice shots of this one, yet the heating bulb was tricky.
So I sharped the head somewhat and did trickery with the eyes (all red in this shot). Hope you like it! Corn snake,Geotagged,Oliemeulen,Pantherophis guttatus,The Netherlands

Unlimitethhh Bokeh (ode to 'JungleDragon' Ferdy;-)) Wow, it took the snake great length to crawl towards me, subtle moments in grace. Such a fascinating creature! This is the first photo I uploaded of my Oliemeulen visit (Tilburg). • The fifth limb

The fifth limb Did you know the Emerald Tree Monitor is one of the few Varanus species to actually use its tail as an extra limb? I thought it kind of obvious, but there I was wrong.
For the Varanus it is a nice treat after some 60 million years of evolutionary promotion. Btw. the tail is 2/3 of its total length. It uses its tail 100% in trees, prefering mangroves, rain forests, or even palm or cacao plantations. Emerald Tree Monitor,Geotagged,Smaragdvaraan,The Netherlands,Varanus prasinus, oliemeulen, varaan

  • Underwater rascal

Underwater rascal A very lucky still of a landstaged alpine newt, floating frozen under water, its invisible hand gripping for balance. It is curious yet afraid. It will not be harmed by me, yet it is triggered for action.
After birth these newts are water creatures, light blue and very contrasting in their multicoloured jackets. Then evolution kicks in, the skin darkens, the yellow aspects fade, orange takes over. Still the same newt it looks like another species in the same lifetime: the landstage. Alpine Newt,Canon EF12mm II,Geotagged,Ichthyosaura alpestris,The Netherlands, macro, soligor 12mm
