Dead-leaf mimic mantis (Acanthops sp.) hanging upside-down from a twig at night near Iquitos, Peru

The previous year in the same area I found a different wonderful dead-leaf mimic mantis: http://www.jungledragon.com/image/35760

I believe this one is in the same genus Acanthops, but probably a different species since it is so much stockier than last year's mantis.

Yes, it certainly looks different to the other one although I have to admit I am still trying to work out where the heads etc. are! Great camouflage that is for sure! Posted 9 years ago

  It's certainly not obvious! Look for the teeny-tiny antennae on the bottom of the left side of the mantis, then next to those are the pointy eyes. If you zoom in you can more easily see the "shark teeth" edge where the grasping arms are folded. Posted 9 years ago

Someone suggested that this mantis is one of the species in the genus Deroplatys, but that can't be right because Deroplatys is an Asian genus. Posted 9 years ago
