What is the Big Burn? Is it a recent event?

That was in 1988... it burned out over 35% of the entire park, which is 2,221,766 acres. That's a BIG fire!
But nature cares for its own... it's all coming back to life!

So true, still shocking how fragile nature can be. I remember from my trip to South Africa that it was a constant threat. In fact, the locals would burn the side lanes of most roads and seperate the rest with a ditch. It looks nasty but it is to avoid a single spark of fire burning down half the country.

It is scary how delicate the balance is, between creation and destruction.
Africa must have been a magical experience!

Yes it was. It has a vibe to it that I cannot explain. The only downside to me was that you cant really hike like you can in South America. The animals are too dangerous.
